A 23-year-old resident of the Ahuntsic-Cartierville has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend. Ali Mahadi Mahamat said little Wednesday as he appeared before Judge Dennis Galiatsatos at the Montreal courthouse via a video linkup with the Riviére-des-Prairies Detention Centre where he is detained.

Denis Bégin, the killer who escaped from a minimum-security penitentiary this month, was caught planning to do the same thing three years ago. The 58-year-old murderer was incarcerated at the Federal Training Centre, a minimum-security penitentiary in Laval when he escaped Feb. 15. Staff at the institution discovered he was missing just after noon that day.

Quebec Municipal Affairs Minister Andrée Laforest said on Wednesday that the South Shore city of Chambly has been placed under provincial trusteeship. Laforest’s announcement was made a few hours after Quebec’s anti-corruption unit (UPAC) launched early-morning raids targeting the municipality’s city hall, municipal garage and administrative offices.

The Montreal Alouettes say they have terminated Johnny Manziel’s contract at the direction of the CFL. The move comes after Manziel “contravened the agreement, which made him eligible to play in the league,” the team said in a statement issued on Wednesday afternoon. “We are disappointed by this turn of events. Johnny was provided a great deal of support by our organization, in collaboration with the CFL, but he has been unable to abide by the terms of his agreement,” Kavis Reed, the team’s general manager said in the statement. “We worked with the league and presented alternatives to Johnny, who was unwilling to proceed.”

Quebec Premier François Legault says he’s appalled that hockey fans would hurl insults at a player because he’s black. Speaking to reporters before question period Wednesday in Quebec City, Legault raised the case of Jonathan-Ismael Diaby, a semi-pro hockey player who was subjected to racist taunts during a game in St-Jérôme last Saturday. Legault says he would have expected the game to be stopped so those responsible for the slurs could be ejected from the arena.
