Children Of The Corn (1984)
Run Time: 92 min | IMDb: 5.6/10
Based on the short story by Stephen King, Children Of The Corn is set in the fictitious town of Gatlin, Nebraska, where children are drawn to ritualistically murder both the local adults and hapless passers-by to ensure a plentiful corn harvest. They act on the whims of “He who walks behind the rows,” a mysterious, bloodthirsty deity. The film’s become something of a cult classic, spawning eight sequels, as well as a TV remake in 2009 that more closely followed King’s original story.
The Shining (1980)
Run Time: 146 min | IMDb: 8.4/10
This thriller from Stephen King, directed by Stanley Kubrick, sees Jack Nicholson embody an alcoholic father who takes an off-season position as caretaker of a remote hotel in order to jumpstart his writing career. He brings his family along for the ride and soon, supernatural hauntings begin to happen. Twin girls at the end of a hallway, the ghosts of slain Native Americans, Nicholson’s character losing his ever-loving mind, an elevator filled with blood, all the normal elements of a truly terrifying King adaptation can be found in this one.
Shutter Island (2010)
Run Time: 138 min | IMDb: 8.1/10
DiCaprio and Scorsese team up again, this time for a dramatic thriller that feels different from their normal fare but still just as intense. DiCaprio plays a detective drawn to a mysterious island that houses a psychiatric facility for the criminally insane. He’s investigating the case of an escaped convict, but a conveniently-timed storm, a hostile staff, and some strange happenings lead him down a rather dark and dangerous rabbit hole. There’s a twist ending here worthy of its build-up, and DiCaprio shares the screen with some notable talents including Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Emily Mortimer.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Run Time: 90 min | IMDb: 7.6/10
John Krasinski’s breakout horror flick has made its way to Hulu. The film stars Krasinski and his wife, Emily Blunt, as a couple trying their best to raise their family in the middle of an apocalypse where the slightest sound might attract other-worldly creatures intent on hunting them down and killing them. It’s a thrilling turn for both actors, with twists you don’t see coming and a satisfying ending.
28 Weeks Later (2007) (Requires Starz Add On)
Run Time: 100 min | IMDb: 7/10
Jeremy Renner and Rose Byrne star in the sequel to Danny Boyle’s British horror flick. The first film followed a pretty unlucky bike courier who wakes up from a coma and finds his city not only deserted but filled with the undead. This time around, the US Army is trying to secure an area of London for survivors to escape the zombie horde but, of course, things don’t go as planned.
Let The Right One In (2008)
Run Time: 115 min | IMDb: 7.9/10
For a great tale of bullying and revenge that would pair well with Carrie, look no further than this Swedish film from director Tomas Alfredson in which a picked-on boy meets a new friend who’s not exactly who she appears to be. There have been so many vampire stories over the years it’s easy to think that all the possibilities have been wrung from the concept. Yet this sweet, bloody, and ultimately unsettling story finds a new twist.
Friday The 13th (1980)
Run Time: 95 min | IMDb: 6.5/10
Kevin Bacon and Betsy Palmer star in this classic horror flick that follows a group of summer camp counselors who are terrorized before the start of the season. As the teens prep the cabins for kids to stay, they’re quickly murdered off in increasingly graphic ways before the horrifying backstory of the camp and the boy who drowned there is revealed.
Zombieland (2009)
Run Time: 88 min | IMDb: 7.6/10
Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and Jesse Eisenberg star in this zom-com about a group of survivors traveling the country together during the zombie apocalypse. Eisenberg plays Columbus, a nerdy kid who believes that, if he sticks to his rules, he’ll make it out of this thing alive. Harrelson plays Tallahassee, a man on an odd mission, and Stone plays Wichita, a grifter, and con-artist with her own reasons for joining the pair. It’s a gore-filled riot that knows how to make fun of itself.
Hellraiser (1987)
Run Time: 94 min | IMDb: 7/10
Clive Barker became one of the leading voices of horror in the 1980s thanks to the graphic, bloody, sexually frank stories found in his Books of Blood collections. For his directorial debut, Barker turned to his novella The Hellbound Heart, the story of a mysterious puzzle box and the demonic creature it unleashes. It remains an effective combination of scares and kinkiness, filled with creepy images and the unforgettable Cenobites, the strangely reasonable sounding monsters who’ve lost any distinction between pain and pleasure.
Tragedy Girls (2017)
Run Time: 98 min | IMDb: 6/10
Two friends, McKayla and Sadie, run a blog called “Tragedy Girls” and are desperate for new followers. So desperate that they’ll do anything to become more popular — yes, this includes murder. As their actions continue to drive their small town into a frenzy, the two friends relish in the fact that they’re becoming real-life horror icons in the process.
Paranormal Activity (2007)
Run Time: 86 min | IMDb: 6.3/10
Shot entirely on cell-phone cameras (a first for a wide-release film), Paranormal Activity spawned a horror movie franchise as well as helped electrify the found-footage convention within the genre. After a young couple moves into an idyllic suburban home, they begin to notice unusual events taking place. In order to figure out what’s happening, they strategically set up cameras throughout their house in hopes of capturing some evidence of any kind.
