Seeing the Country with Fresh Eyes

This fall has been an exciting and eye-opening time for me. With my son, Grey, now a high school senior, we've been spending our weekends visiting colleges — some close to home, others farther afield. It's been a wonderful journey, allowing us to explore different corners of the country together. I've visited places like Colorado, Pennsylvania, upstate New York, Palm Springs and even Toronto, the city of my alma mater, where I took an official tour and discovered things I never knew during my four years there! Beyond the college search, these travels have offered a chance to see the unique beauty of each region and experience the richness and diversity of the U.S. through a new lens. When I was growing up, visiting colleges wasn't even on my radar, so it's been special to share these new experiences with my family. I'd love to hear about your neck of the woods! "Pie, Pie, Pie, I Love Pie!" Who Doesn't?!?

This line from the movie Michael, sung by Andie MacDowell for John Travolta, perfectly sums up my feelings! Pie has always been a central part of my family life. In the summer, we enjoy peach and blueberry, and in the fall, it's all about apple and pumpkin. My mom is the true baker in the family, and like any good daughter, I think her creations are the best. We rarely gather as a family without a pie on the table! Last weekend, she stayed with me, and naturally, we baked together. One of the things I love most about her recipe is the crust—super flaky, quite thin and vegan! She uses oil instead of butter, which makes the pastry light, delicate and much quicker to whip up. If you'd like to give it a try, I'm happy to share the recipe! PIE DOUGH Put 2 cups flour and 1 teaspoon salt into a large mixing bowl. In a measuring cup, mix 2/3 cup oil and 1/4 cup water, then pour into the flour mixture. Stir with a fork until the dough holds together, adding a little more water if too dry. Shape the dough into a ball, then divide it into two halves (for a top and bottom crust, or two bottoms). To roll out, prepare two squares of wax paper. Sprinkle a little water on the counter to hold the wax paper in place. Place one ball of dough between the sheets and roll to about 12" in diameter for a 10" pie pan. Repeat for the second half, if making a top crust. Add your favorite filling, place the top crust and crimp edges as you like. Enjoy!

I just finished reading this book to gear up for the movie that comes out next month! It's a departure from the musical, but I loved getting into a different side of The Wizard of Oz story that's so iconic. |
| This is a great story about friendship and loss that features a ton of colorful descriptions of delicious meals and cooking. I really felt like I was on the girl's trip too! |

This mystery/thriller is about a young couple who take a wrong turn onto a deserted road and end up mixed up in an investigation into the string of murders that have taken place on it. A quick read with some seriously spooky vibes! |

| TOMORROW, AND TOMORROW, AND TOMORROW by Gabrielle Zevin
|
A number of our editors recommended this one, so I decided I had to give it a go! What a fun, fast read — and, as parenting editor Marisa LaScala pointed out, super nostalgic for anyone who grew up in the 80s or 90s. Sam MacAvoy, who works in the GH Test Kitchen said, "The story expertly weaves themes of friendship, ambition, love and loss." The book is about designing video games but requires no knowledge or even interest in this world. I found myself intrigued by the storytelling and the detail that goes into making these games! — Jane Francisco |

Over the past few years, I've unofficially become the "Advent Calendar Aunt." I've always loved the idea of opening a little door each day leading up to Christmas, but I never had one of my own growing up. Periods are normal, but kids pointing them out in their sketches is something else. Australian woman Penny Rohleder shared a photo of her son's drawing on the Facebook page of blogger Constance Hall on Jul. 25, which well, says it all. For centuries , humans have used fish oils, orally or topically, to treat a wide array of ailments, from aches and pains to rickets and gout. The popularity of this supplement has shifted over the years, as have its primary uses. But over the past couple of decades, the hype around fish oil has arguably reached an all-time high. According to National Institutes of Health statistics , in 2012, at least 18.8 million Americans used about $1.3 billion dollars worth of fish oil, making it the third most widely used supplement in the nation. (Sales reportedly flattened out at about that level around 2013.)
