Breaking: Speaker Johnson Announces Males Will Be Banned from Women’s Bathrooms on Capitol Hill

House Speaker Mike Johnson announced Wednesday his intention to ban biological males who identify as transgender women from using women’s bathrooms and locker rooms on Capitol Hill.

“All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings — such as restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms — are reserved for individuals of that biological sex,” Johnson said in a statement.

“It is important to note that each Member office has its own private restroom, and unisex restrooms are available throughout the Capitol.  "Women deserve women's only spaces.”

The move comes as Representative Nancy Mace (R., S.C.) pushes to include in the upcoming House rules package a measure to prevent incoming transgender Representative Sarah McBride (D., Del.), formerly known as Tim McBride, from using women’s facilities. McBride is male and the first transgender-identifying lawmaker elected to Congress.

House rules give the Speaker “general control” over the Capitol’s facilities. The House sargeant-at-arms would be responsible for enforcing the new restroom policy once enacted.

Mace has said she received death threats for her unapologetic opposition to biological men in women’s spaces and accused her political opponents of trying to bully her into backing down. Democrats have strongly criticized Mace for supposedly singling out McBride and taking an anti-transgender position.

“This person wants to come in and use women's spaces. If I'm in, as a woman, I'm changing clothes in the locker room because I use the gym when I'm up here in DC, the women's gym, and a man shows up, and his genitalia, his penis is in the room, no! Like I'm not — it's not OK,” Mace said on NewsNation Tuesday night.

She doubled down Wednesday and announced legislation to ban biological males from women’s facilities on all federal property. As a rape survivor, Mace is candid about her past experience with domestic abuse and subsequent trauma.

“Idk who needs to hear this, but some guy who wants to force his junk into women's bathrooms is mentally ill,” Mace said on X Wednesday.

McBridge has characterized Mace’s campaign as an “attempt from far right-wing extremists to distract from the fact that they have no real solutions to what Americans are facing.”

“We should be focused on bringing down the cost of housing, health care, and child care, not manufacturing culture wars,” McBride added.

The issue of men who identify as transgender playing women’s sports became a hot-button cultural flashpoint this election cycle after biological men shattered women’s records in various athletic competitions and in some instances injured female competitors.

President-elect Donald Trump’s television advertisement labeling Vice President Kamala Harris as the candidate for “they/them” played a pivotal role in Trump’s decisive election victory on his way to a second presidential term. Public opinion polls have shown widespread opposition to biological males in women’s sports and the activist claim that they are more than two genders.
