This Season, I'm Hoping to Catch Up With Friends (and Take Better Care of Myself!)
|
I don't often get to see Sandra Lee (above), who splits her time between the West Coast and New York, but we made up for it with a wonderful heart-to-heart this week. | I can't remember the first time I met Sandra Lee, which is strange, since Sandra truly is unforgettable. Her personality is larger than life — she's endlessly fun and always working on something fascinating. Over time, Sandra has introduced me to countless remarkable people who are doing equally remarkable things. I got to hang out with Sandra last night, and she wanted me to send all of you her best. |
One of my most vivid memories of Sandra is not actually based on her signature "fun." A few years ago, she invited me to join her, alone in a screening room, to watch her powerful documentary Rx: Early Detection, A Cancer Journey with Sandra Lee. It's an unfiltered and deeply personal portrayal of her experience — from diagnosis to surgery and recovery. I couldn't keep from crying as I held her hand. |
Sandra and I onstage (top) launching her Good Housekeeping cover story, where she opened up about her childhood and shared her recent breast cancer trauma; some of the beautiful (and cute!) items from her holiday line with QVC. |
That same strength and openness was clear last night, when Sandra reminded me that taking care of ourselves and our health is vital. She looked me in the eye and said, "Make sure to make time for you before the end of the year." Life can be overwhelming, and the holidays only add to the stress. So join me in following Sandra's advice, and remember to "put your mask on before helping others." On a much lighter note, Sandra has recently taken her iconic Semi-Homemade legacy in a heartwarming new direction. Just in time for the holidays, she's launched Aunt Sandy Claus on QVC, a delightful line of cozy, charming decorations and housewares. It's a wonderful evolution of her persona — blending the warmth and creativity we all love about Sandra with the magic of the season. |

With Thanksgiving practically in the oven, it's the perfect time to think about how we're shopping this holiday season. While Black Friday gets all the buzz, I recently learned about Small Business Saturday, a national day dedicated to supporting local and independent businesses. Whether it's your favorite neighborhood shop or a standout online brand, there are so many ways to make your holiday shopping meaningful. I love the idea of pausing during the holiday rush to discover unique finds and support the people who bring creativity and heart to their communities. To help you get started, here are two inspiring women-owned businesses making a difference: |

Periods are normal, but kids pointing them out in their sketches is something else. Australian woman Penny Rohleder shared a photo of her son's drawing on the Facebook page of blogger Constance Hall on Jul. 25, which well, says it all. SEE ALSO: James Corden tests out gymnastics class for his son and is instantly showed up by children "I don't know whether to be proud or embarrassed that my 5 year old son knows this," Rohleder wrote. "Julian drew a family portrait. I said 'What's that red bit on me?' And he replied, real casual, 'That's your period.'" Well, at least he knows. To give further context, Rohleder revealed she had pulmonary embolism in October 2016, and was put on blood thinning treatment which makes her periods "very, very bad," she explained to the Daily Mail . For centuries , humans have used fish oils, orally or topically, to treat a wide array of ailments, from aches and pains to rickets and gout. The popularity of this supplement has shifted over the years, as have its primary uses. But over the past couple of decades, the hype around fish oil has arguably reached an all-time high. According to National Institutes of Health statistics , in 2012, at least 18.8 million Americans used about $1.3 billion dollars worth of fish oil, making it the third most widely used supplement in the nation. (Sales reportedly flattened out at about that level around 2013.) Today, many use it because they believe it will broadly help their heart health , but others hold that fish oil can help with renal health, bone, and joint conditions, cognitive functions and mental wellness, and any number of other conditions. But is fish oil really as good for you as millions of Americans believe it is? Who should be taking it and when? We dove into the research and ...
